Refining & Petrochemical Engineers work in oil refineries and chemical plants to process crude oil and natural gas into useful products such as fuels (gasoline, diesel), plastics, chemicals, and petrochemical products.
They are responsible for process optimization, plant operations, safety, and efficiency.
Standard: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Monday to Friday)
Weekly: 40–48 hours
Shift Work: Common in refineries (24/7 operations)
Overtime: Frequent during maintenance shutdowns or emergencies
Knowledge of refining processes (distillation, cracking, reforming)
Chemical process design and optimization
Process simulation software (Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Plus)
Safety standards (HAZOP, risk assessment)
Plant operations and troubleshooting
Data analysis and process control
Communication skills
Monitor and optimize refinery and petrochemical processes
Ensure safe and efficient plant operations
Conduct process design and improvements
Perform safety assessments and risk analysis
Troubleshoot operational issues and equipment failures
Coordinate with maintenance and production teams
Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations
